Ten Commandments for Tourists in Goa.

To all those coming to Goa for the Christmas week, and especially for Sunburn.

Since most of you go totally crazy the moment you set foot in Goa, I thought it would be prudent to put together an instructional manual. Let’s call it Goa for Dummies. Because honestly, if you’re coming to Goa in December, for Sunburn, when Goa is at its worst, you ARE a dummy.

Here’s what you need to know:

1)  Goa is different, it’s not Delhi. Goans are raised and taught to respect women. It’s a deeply-ingrained part of our culture. We expect you to do the same, too. While it’s true that women dress far more liberally in Goa than in any other part of India, it doesn’t give you the license to assault, molest or rape them. Don’t believe what Bollywood tells you about Goa. Remember Bipasha Basu saying “Here (in Goa), liquor is cheap, and the women are cheaper?” She was probably referring to herself when on holiday. Anyway, here’s a non-negotiable instruction: If you see Goan women, and you will—Stay. The. Fuck. Away. From. Them.

2)  Drugs are illegal in Goa. You shouldn’t do them, but more importantly, NEVER should you put drugs in others’ drinks to control their behaviour and later take advantage of them. If you feel the overwhelming urge to do so, please consume your drugs yourself, buy even more drugs, consume them too, and die.

3)  Most of you associate Goa with cheap alcohol, and will be drunk before you know it. Make a conscious decision not to drive or ride when drunk. If you MUST do that, please be sure to crash against a tree or wall and kill yourselves, not others. I’m talking to you, rented bike walas. If you're riding/driving while drunk, an awesome thing to do is to go down a ferry wharf into the river.

4)   There are no-swim zones on Goa’s beaches. Don’t enter them when told not to do so. When drunk, don’t enter the water at all. Again, if you deliberately choose to act smart and ignore flags & warnings by lifeguards, I hope the sea invites you to be part of its bed. It’s comfortable there, and you won’t be able to make a nuisance of yourself anymore.

5)  Stay calm and quiet. Nobody likes a noisy tourist. Also, try not to sing loudly while riding, especially in residential areas. Else, I hope this and much more happens to you.

6)  Dress appropriately, as you would back home. The cities are not the beach. Churches, temples & mosques are certainly not the beach. Respect us, and we will respect you.

7)   If you’re from Delhi or Gurgaon, try not to carry guns with you. And if you’re some dickhead VIP’s kid, try not to shoot anyone you might have a minor disagreement with. That includes me.

8)  Know where you’re going. Don’t get confused when you see a turn or roundabout and suddenly stop in the middle of the road. Also, learn to pronounce names of Goan places. It’s all part and parcel of being a good tourist. Speak to locals with due respect.

9)  Two questions banned: “Ladki kidhar milegi (where do I find women?)’ and ‘Boss, where can I score’. For the first, you’ll be directed to the police station, and for the second, to the nearest football ground.

10)  Keep Goa clean. Do not litter. Do not spit paan on the roads. And don’t do ‘khwaak-thoo’.

Goans reading this, please report violations of any kind to the police. Especially drunken, rash & negligent driving. If you see any instance of it, call the police, push them to file an FIR, and personally give a statement and stand witness in Court. I will do the same. It's the responsibility of every one of us to keep Goan roads safe. Life is far too precious to be lost just because a fucking tourist decided he wants another peg.

This must be printed and posted as a cautionary notice on every entrance at Sunburn. Just one thing, trees have lives too!
Happy New Year, Brits!

Good job your advice is worth taking note. Tourist take note Goa is no Place to find girls on the road. You won't find a goan girl looking for a friend. What you have seen in the movies is all false. So ask them if you are disappointed. Remember these same movie guys always portraid our goans as smugglers and bad guys in the movies , remember the Roberts and Anthony Gonsalves.

Nigel Ba'ab, well said. Specially the portion about respecting women. all those crying hoarse about objectification of women & blaming dress sense for crimes against women, are the ones who aim nothing other than subjugation of women. Also the part about littering our state 7 reporting rash driving is pretty approp, esp now

Good, really hope all those numb-heads who mis-associate Goa with getting drunk and getting scores read it & die of shame.

This is a must read blog throughout the year in Goa and on the tourist website as a cautionary tale. Amazingly put.

Sounds so good to the ears- especially coming from a guy. A special thank you. Goa seems so much safer just reading this. I love Goa, not for the touristy attractions, but for its simple living and warm people. Btw, you just gave a complex to all the MCPs in Delhi! :)

Very well written. Being a Dilliwallah myself, I hope even if 50 Dilliwallah's read this, they might get some sense knocked into them.

Thanks for taking the time to write this. Will share it with as many people I can. All goans share the resentment you feel towards these tourists. For 22 years of my life I have seen it go from visits to a year long tourist trash resort.

Hope things change soon.

Well said Nigel. I have never been to Goa, but def want to come. And my plans will be to avoid Dec-Jan coz the tourists crowd is the worst during that time... ironical since I too am a tourist!! Love the place... :)

Unknown said...

this should go down as an important piece of document... tourists need to follow a decorum. i think another important point is to reduce the use of vehicles.there isn't infrastructure to support the number of fancy cars coming from across the country.

Clify J said...

While I do understand the sentiments the locals and do honestly agree to every point mentioned in this article...I must however express my opinion of how a major portion of the local goan population are possibly some of the most arrogant and rude people I've come across in my lifetime. Maybe if it could be more of give and take situation it would greatly benefit the tourists as well as the locals. Just my 0.02 $

Well Written....only fact is tat we should not just say it abt delhites......it should b for all......

Dear Nigel

If you are expecting these tourists to Goa to not generalize about its people and culture, then stop doing it yourself in the first place.

Not everyone one from Delhi / Gurgaon rapes women, carries a gun or spits on the road. I am not saying that folks don't do that but if you're going to stereotype, then how are you any different from those you're ranting against?

And please do not be holier than thou as if people from one region are better than the other. Dig deep and you find black sheep everywhere.

To malign a community for that makes no sense to me at least.

What a vicious bunch of crap! A drunken idiot who goes swimming deserves to drown? That seems kind of excessive. As for the Goan women, I can't imagine that any tourist would want to hit on them. (I'm from Pune)

Nigel... well said. I think overtime people have made all kinda assumption regarding Goa and they feel its their rightto "live" their "fantasy" in goa. I hope things change for the better... and soon enough!

Good 10 Commandments Nigel... Now go and shave yourself. For Goans are clean shaven :P

What an irony. The same person who is protecting Goa from stereotyping is doing the same with Delhi. As if Goa is a land of saints and pious! While the message is right the equations are truckload of shit.

Perfect!!! For a non-Goan I completely agree to your post. I loved Goa back in 1999 - it was truly free and respectful but we all can bring back d glory.

And YES - PLEASE GET NAMES OF THE PLACES RIGHT!!!

Unknown said...

very well written and agree with almost all the points , but do remember that the whole economy of Goa is based on tourists so maybe you could show the same respect to them as after all directly or indirectly its their money which is keeping the state going ... ask taxi guys not to steal people in form of fixed rates , provide some basic public transport as normally tourists dont pack their cars and bikes along , allow so called outsiders to do business without just taking tacit approvals from local dons.as for drugs ...kindly do request the local dons to to supply to tourists .... anyway got to work now but overall well written ..take care

Nice article indeed...Respect your sentiments towards women....But guns could be carried by any1 so no point in dragging Delhi or Gurgon or any other city. Keep up the good work. Peace

While I agree with most of the point mentioned..I strongly reject the condescending tone and a sense of authority but let me explain why.

1. If the locals are so concerned about drug abuse situation, I suggest they take this up with the Russian mafia who enjoy a rather significant control in Goa thanks to the encouragement from none other than the locals.

2. Not every individual from Gurgaon and Delhi varry guns. Just like how every Goan is not susegaad and Mac.

3. To see an equally littered Goa, a Kolva beach infested mostly by locals is no different. This is an issue with all of us.

4. Please do not consider Goa as an independent Domicile or a delusional paramouncy. Every Indian enjoys the same right in Goa that they do in Delhi. To know how Goans behave on bike rides please visit Marcel or other remote parts.

5. I understand that for some part our behaviour isnt the best but that does not mean your colonial hangover has the right to crticize every Infian. Do not forget, you are to an Australian what a Delhiite is to you. :)

6. If you want to represent Goa as not a libetally free place to party I suggest you get your act together and help the tourism board to change the way Goa is being marketed. If you want the Vatican pilgrimage to head to Ibiza then let Ibiza be the stairway to ressurection.

7. I understand that some do cross the line but those exceptions are within us. Goa is not a country yet if you know what I mean. Please note that all similar destinations including Spain and Ibiza have the same amount of cacophony.

8. What makes Goa is the very existence that most women otherwise cannot enjoy in the rest of India, for the most part. If people just wanted to enjoy the beach I might add that a better coastal destination is nit out of reach.

Tired or typing..but certainly am not short of words..

PS: I am from Mumbai and my wife is a Goan just so you know how to prepare.

Unknown said...

I completely agree!! Although a Konkan native I've been visiting Goa even before I got to my senses of "where am I". I frequent this second home of mine at least 3-4 times a year. Lately, for the last 2-3 years I have indeed notice this unruly behavior. Especially from the people from the northern part of India. - Absolutely true Nessun. I personally have had conflicts, correcting a bunch of Delhi-ites about throwing bottles on beach, screaming on road and misbehaving with Indians and foreign tourists in a drunken state on multiple occasions. Will be def sharing this.

dude before even you blame anyone, blame your administration not anyone else. Whatever happens in goa is spoken outside. why no one talks about kerala, the fact behind is you actually dont get drugs, girls in kerala so openly as u get in goa. Goa is a city which thrives on tourist, I would suggest take a chill pill and if you really want to blame someone, please blame your goverment.

Feel sad to see Goa change so much in the last 3 years.. Women alone are not safe in many parts of North Goa today.

Hope the local cops beef up their security to maintain peace esp during Christmas and New Year..

Just too good. We need to Post this in every newspaper in Delhi, Mumbai and other places. And thanks for making the time to write this on Simple Words.

Best of all, introduce passports so we don't get the treash into Goa. have a visa office in delhi and Bombay or even on the border or at Airport where we can give Visas on arrival. All nasty looking Punjabis and UPites rejected on landing and deported to Gaziabad.

I know it's coming a whole year late but it still rings clanging bell. Loved especially "khwaak-thoo" part. :D Us Bangaloreans need to be drilled with that part. Annoys the hell out of me when people do that from the city bus without a thought abt us hapless bikers. Yeah, right. Forgot that we are the free thuppal posts who just happened around.

Why just Goa mate?? Applicable to whole of India....be it Leh, North East, Rishikesh or Rajasthan...we need to make our heritage more touristic..

Jess said...

"She was probably referring to herself when on holiday." No Sir, what she was doing was portraying a fictional character. Badmouthing an actress to make your point doesn't exactly display a sense of respect for women. Oh wait, respect, it seems, is something only Goan women deserve. "If you see Goan women, and you will—Stay. The. Fuck. Away. From. Them." Note the holier-than-thou commandment does not require you to stay the fuck away from women in general. 'Just not our Goan women please. Find a Bollywood actress on holiday perhaps?'. When Goans were being "raised and taught to respect women", they clearly missed at least one Goan.
